Workshop in progress

Teachers Council of Malawi in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology organized a workshop to adapt the ODL Teacher Development Framework for Sub Saharan Africa.  The workshop was funded by the Commonwealth of Learning (CoL) and it took place from 20th to 22nd October 2025.  The objectives of the workshop were to;

  1. develop a national framework for ODL based in service teacher training
  2. build a shared understanding of Malawi’s context in the provision of CPDs
  3. establish a roadmap to enroll and train at least 100 teachers in pilot ODL CPD programme

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Foster Gondwe from School of Education, University of Malawi.  It was attended by Officers from various departments of Ministry of Education, Science and Technology including DTED, DBE, and DQAS, MCDE, Nalikule College of Education, TCM and Teachers.

At the end of the three days’ workshop the ODL Framework for teacher development in Sub Saharan Africa was adapted to conform to the Malawian context.  This workshop will be followed by a validation workshop to ensure that all issues that were adapted have been adequately addressed in the framework.

Teachers Council of Malawi and Ministry of Education, Science and Technology put emphasis on teacher development and as such this workshop was regarded as an important step towards expanding the provision of teacher CPDs through Open Distance and e-learning.  With financial and technical support from Commonwealth of Learning, TCM, MoEST and MCDE will pilot the use of the adapted framework by training at least 100 teachers through e-learning in various ODL in-service programmes.  The trainings will be offered to more teachers after the pilot phase to build capacity of various teaching professionals in Malawi.

Teachers Council of Malawi would like to thank all participants who took part in the adaptation workshop.  Special thanks also go to Dr. Foster Gondwe for facilitating the workshop and Commonwealth of Learning for the financial support.
